In case you missed the fanfare, liquid lipsticks are pretty big news right now and have popped up just about everywhere from drugstores to fanciful designer apparitions. The term once interpreted a dry, flaky mess of pigment that would see you reaching for the nearest lip balm but luckily things have moved on a lot since then. So what exactly is a liquid lipstick?

Essentially, they’re a mishmash of gloss application with the intense pigment of a lipstick and while they apply as a liquid they dry down to an opaque, almost chalky, matte finish. Having mastered the formula a whole host of beauty brands have jumped on board to offer a fresh change of pace from the standard lipstick bullet with an innovative solution that refuses to flake, smudge or fade. Of course this can boast an issue for the less experienced lipstick wearer and while it can be a tricky art to master the advantages far outweigh the fiddly application; they really are a one coat wonder and they promise to stay put for hours on end.

Thanks to the likes of Kylie Jenner, whose line of liquid lipsticks sold out almost immediately after release, they’re becoming more and more popular by the day. At first, you could only find them online and imported from the US but now they’ve finally made their way onto the great British high street. This month, the 13 September, will see the hotly anticipated UK launch of Kat Von D’s iconic, high performance beauty brand which is well known for its range of high pigment Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks and she’s not alone either as Giorgio Armani and Yves Saint Laurent are launching their long-wear lippies this month too.

The market is saturated and us beauty buffs couldn’t be happier but for any novices out there, there are a few things to remember. While most new formulas manage to drench your lips in colour whilst simultaneously hydrating the pout liquid lipsticks can feel a little drying so remember to prep your lips with a tiny bit of wax-based lip balm to keep them moist and always exfoliate prior to application. Because of their notorious long-lasting formula they’re also pretty tough to remove so make sure you invest in an oil based makeup remover to help get the colour out of the crevices in your lips.
