15 best baby shower gifts
The gifts mums-to-be will really thank you for
There are a lot of ideas for baby showers on the market now. With the boom of Instagram mums has come so much (mostly brilliant) 'mama merchandise' that mums-to-be can be inundated with this as well as the more standard tradition of soft toys and unisex babygrows in size newborn which they grow out of in, what feels like, minutes. And lots of blankets.
All are lovely and a lot, of course, comes down to personal preference but let’s face it there’s only so many of the latter that parents actually need or want.
So, these are the gifts we know she’ll really thank you for. Some immediately, some later when baby arrives and they’re helping her gain a few more hours' sleep!
Some are mum-focused. Because every new mother needs treats.
Some help ease life with a newborn baby and some are just really beautiful bits for baby that a mum would love, but maybe not buy herself.
We’ve edited through all of the options to bring you the best based on personal and professional experience with usability, desirability, style, taste when necessary and value for money taken into account.
Aden + Anais Twinkle 4-pack of classic swaddles: £44.95, Aden + Anais
One of the most useful items a new mother can own. You don’t appreciate quite how many muslins you’ll need until baby arrives.
For discretion when nursing, to wipe baby dribble, as a sunshade or blanket. Aden + Anais’s are 100 per cent cotton, breathable, super soft and we don’t actually know a mother without one.
The four-pack will keep them going for a while and the star print is gender-neutral and stylish but there are lots of different designs available to choose from.
Bloom & Blossom Mother to Be Gift Set Trio: £45, Bloom & Blossom
One of our favourite baby shower gifts and great value for three of the brands full-sized hero products (the total RRP of which would be £56) Bloom & Blossom’s Mother to Be Gift Set contains a delicious, fresh but relaxing lightly floral scented Anti Stretch Mark Cream, Indulgence Bath Oil and Revitalising Leg & Foot Spray, all of which are completely natural and safe to use during pregnancy and beyond.
It all comes in a nicely packaged giftbox for the ultimate pampering treat. All products are also available to buy separately.

They make a lovely baby shower, new baby or just any occasion gift for chocolate-lovers. Available in boxes of 12 bites, six slices or 24 bites.

A beautiful idea, these luxe leather memory cases are the perfect place to store all of babies’ firsts. From scan pictures to first shoes, toys, photos, newspapers from the day of the birth and any other treasured keepsake.
Each can be personalised with a gold embossed luggage name tag from £10. Available in a regular or large (£150) size they’re also available in duck egg, grey, blush and navy. It makes a beautiful gift on its own or filled with new-mum essentials from nappies to nipple cream!
Cashmere hand knitted booties in mushroom: £28, Olivier Baby & Kids
A luxury accessory for baby’s first wardrobe. These 100 per cent cashmere booties are beautifully soft and warm and available in size 0-6 or 6-12 months. One of those items every new mum would love for baby but wouldn’t necessarily buy herself. And one that would definitely be popped in the memory case when baby outgrows them.
Available all in mushroom (which is a great unisex alternative to the usual grey/cream offerings), cream, blues and a pretty dusty rose pink. Hand wash only (or on the hand wash machine cycle) but hopefully as these will mostly be used before baby can move too much, they won’t require very much of this anyway.
Artipoppe Zeitgeist Baby Carrier in Dark Leopard: £291, Artipoppe
If you’re feeling very generous… There are some brilliant baby carriers and slings available but the Artipoppe is the newest, probably most desirable, functional, stylish baby accessory to own. A star in its own right on all of the most stylish influencer and Instagram mothers, it can make a simple t-shirt and old jeans look like the most effortlessly cool outfit ever.
Firstly, it’s leopard print. Secondly, it’s actually really comfortable to wear – the 100 per cent cotton fabric is really soft. It’s machine-washable. Easy to get on (spoken from experience, for many you need a full manual) and can be used to carry babies from six months – two years (seven-20kg) in multiple positions – back and front carry. It’s also available in other leopard prints, colourful prints and beautiful crushed velvets.
Nom Nom Bump Bundle: £48.60, Nom Nom Skincare
A certified organic skincare range for mum and baby developed by a massage and nutritional therapist, Nom Nom products are completely natural, nourishing and made specifically to address a mum-to-be’s most important needs as she goes through pregnancy. The bump bundle contains the Stretch Butter to support expanding skin, Relax Oil to aid sleep and ease aches and Perineum Balm to prepare the body for labour. For an extra £1 add a Kraft gift box.
The packaging is stylishly understated and the products have a natural, simple scent – though the relax oil is more powerful with lavender, chamomile and frankincense – heavenly but not overpowering as sleep products can sometimes be. The products themselves are high quality, light, gentle to use and do what they say on the label. Each one is also available to buy separately.
Bilia Basket: £169, Bilia Baby
The dream eco-friendly moses basket for style conscious mamas-to-be or anyone looking for something a little unique. Bilia baskets are handmade and woven using sustainably sourced dried elephant grass and stitched leather handles. Bbhugme nursing pillow: £63.95, Scandiborn
The smaller version of the popular bbhugme pregnancy pillow. The chiropractor-designed nursing version is the perfect (and most stylish) aid, whether mum-to-be plans on breast or bottle feeding.
It ties around the waist providing support to mum’s neck and shoulders and comfort to baby, and adapts as little ones grow with adjustable firmness. It comes in a handy travel bag and can be used to carry baby on the hip too. When baby gets a little bigger it makes a nice cushion for the nursery! Available in stone or a dusty pink.
Kindle Paperwhite E-reader: £109.99, Amazon
So many mums we spoke to recommended this as a gift they would love to have received pre-baby. Providing they don’t already own one of course. You see, the thing with a paper book is you kind of need two hands to turn pages. When you have a new baby, you need those hands for feeding or holding while they sleep on you.
With a kindle you can be hands-free and with the paperwhite you can read in the dark with no nightlight needed and no bright glare (as you get from a phone or iPad which have potential to disturb baby or partners) which makes it the perfect pastime for night feeds. Oh, and the battery lasts for ages unlike your phone too. It’s available in black or white and as Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + Free 3G.
Satin Edged Cellular Baby Blanket: from £18, The White Company
If there’s one blanket to buy for a baby shower it’s a White Company cellular one. So soft, it’s made of pure cotton and the satin edge is a lovely touch that babies often love to stroke for comfort too. Its lightweight cellular style means it keeps baby warm but doesn’t overheat and is machine-washable. Available in grey, white, blue or pink they’re great value for money – the pram blanket is £18 and the cot version £22.
Handmade sheepskin Moccasins: £38, The Small Home
Most new mums will be spending a fair amount of time nesting at home pre and post birth so a lovely pair of slippers they’ll be happy to show off to the postman are a great gift. The Small Home’s moccasins are cosy, comfortable and probably the prettiest slipper we’ve seen.
Each pair is 100 per cent handmade in the Polish Mountains and hand-embroidered at the toe with a unique floral design. Baby and kids’ sizes are also available - if you want to spend a little more, a coordinating mum and baby pair is a nice idea too.
MyHummy Ash Teddybear – with Bluetooth App: £79.99, My Hummy
We’ve heard so many good things from new parents about MyHummy so couldn’t wait to try it out. It’s the latest craze in baby sleep aids and plays five types of white noise (if you’re not familiar with white noise it’s a calming sound that most often mimics the sounds baby hears in the womb and can help to soothe and relax them) – amniotic fluid with heartbeat, rainfall, sea waves, hairdryer and vacuum cleaner. The sound fades after one hour but activates again if baby starts to stir and there’s a brilliant non-stop mode for a whole night’s sleep.
The new Bluetooth version also lets you use your phone as a remote control so you can adjust the volume and use an alarm mode to send notifications to your phone when baby starts to whimper or cry – like a monitor. After using it for a few days we love it. As did our testers. It looks just like a regular teddy bear but the noise is perfect for soothing babies during naps (even lengthening them a little), for bedtime and whenever they’re distressed. It’s a modern-day comforter.
Each Pear Pear Plum by Allan Ahlberg: £3.99, Amazon
One of the most thoughtful and purse-friendly baby shower gifts has to be a copy of your own favourite childhood book to kick off the perfect baby bookshelf. Each Peach Pear Plum is a good choice with its timeless story and beautiful illustrations. Write a personal message to baby inside to make it extra special.
