10 best baby bibs to keep meal times mess-free
It's no easy feat, we know, but keep wardrobe changes limited with a well-designed cover-up
Every parent knows that when you have a baby, bibs are essential.
But with so many on offer – and with each one claiming to provide the best absorbency, wipe-clean material and coverage – it can be a minefield knowing what brand or type of bib to pick.
The closer little ones get to their toddler years, breakfasts, lunches and dinners become all the more mucky.
Fellow parents say food catchers are the best option, particularly for toddlers, and that plastic generally means less spillages.
So here are the results of our favourite tried and tested baby bibs to help other parents save time that's better spent focusing on what matters – our little bundles.
Nuby lock n roll bib in blue: £2.99 Nuby
Parents of those little rascals whose mealtimes are notorious for food flying at all angles will be thankful for this bib. The product comes with a genius wide set silicone pocket for catching anything from milk spillages, globs of paste and mushy banana bits that despite falling in comical slow motion fashion, are never quite caught in time. The bib’s ultra absorbent wipe-clean surface is spot on for getting rid of mess but also tucks inside the pouch and locks into place to keep the product secure whilst travelling, hence the bib’s quirky name. The colourful garment is ideal for on-the-go feeds and comes in a variety of fun designs that prove both popular and practical.
Ikea kladdig bib: £5.75 Ikea
Youngsters with sensitive skin will feel comfy thanks to the adjustable collar with a hook-and-loop fastening feature on the Ikea kladdig bib. Ikea say the garment’s super-soft element is all thanks to a cluster of rigorous tests, but what really gets our attention is its front pouch to catch the inevitable flyaway grub, which teamed with the bib’s long sleeves makes it a practical choice that keeps mess and moisture at bay.
Mori organic milk bib, two pack: £16.50 Mori
These beautifully-designed bibs by Mori are more like neckerchiefs rather than a classic bib, but what Mori’s offering lacks in size it certainly makes up for in absorbency. It’s mostly intended for liquid spills such as milk and dribbles, making it perfect for tots under the age of two. We found its extra layer underneath did the job in catching those unpredictable spills perfectly, making it more than capable of contending with food catcher-style bibs.
Funky Giraffe ‘I Rock’ red and white square bib: £4.50 Funky Giraffe
Confession time – we’re suckers for slogans, from t-shirts and pyjamas to socks and even on our (very well used) wine glasses. This soft, square is perfect for both boys and girls and features two poppers that fix around the baby’s neck with minimal fuss. Admittedly, it goes against our original brief hailing plastic food catchers, but what we love about this product is that it fits babies from newborns up until three years of age. It’s also made of 100 per cent natural material making it super-soft and ultra-absorbent for dribblers.
Birdsong three-pack snap bibs: £19.95 aden + anais
These are beautiful to look at and have the benefit of soft, cushioned material, which also makes them incredibly absorbent. The bib’s adjustable fit and easy fastening makes the garment a top choice for comfort. But the lack of a pocket at the foot of the bib means it loses points for practicality. The bib does however stay soft through countless washes.
Bibetta pink butterflies ultrabib: £6.99, Bibetta
This brightly-coloured soft and spongy bib with an absorbent pelican-style scooped bottom which catches food screams practicality, making it every parents’ dream. Its stretchy and waterproof material means it can be wiped clean after each use and the large lip pockets liquids as well as solids. It secures with a Velcro strap around the back of the neck and it’s machine washable and tumble dryer proof. The design, has quite rightly, won multiple awards, too.
Jojo Maman Bebe messy feeder silicone bib: £10, Jojo Maman Bebe
The fun animal doodle print and a wide food pocket make this bib an obvious choice. Choose from the bright orange giraffe or loud blue elephant, both of which can be easily folded upwards in preparation for mealtimes and once wiped clean, tucked downwards into itself for easy storage on the go. But what really impressed us is its unusual harness style that secures onto the child’s back and under the arms for maximum comfort.
Matalan five pack bibs: £3, Matalan
Making ends meet for any parent can be tough, and thanks to brands like Matalan, there’s always bargain options on offer. The pretty pink bibs are made from the same fabric as towels, so they’re wonderful for mopping up liquids. The pack of five suit ages up to three and are secured around baby’s neck using Velcro, meaning it’s adjustable for a range of neck sizes.
Cheeky Chompers London town neckerchew: £11.99 Cheeky Chompers
This adorable London-themed neckerchief scores top marks on style with its cute drawings of all things Britain from the Queen’s guards to Union Jacks and double decker buses. With three layers, it’s highly absorbent and it’s held in place with popper fastening and we particularly like the silicone teether section for babies to chew on. Although it says it’s suitable from two months to to years, but this bib would have benefited from a little more material to go around.
Silly Billyz aqua towel long sleeve bib: £6.95 Silly Billyz
A towelled front and nylon arms makes this bib – designed for the messiest of all eaters – a great choice. The opened back means tots won't feel too confined and it also makes it easier for parents to get it on and off – even when it comes to the most fidgety children. The bib’s soft and stretchable neck sits immediately under the toddler’s chin meaning dribble-stained outfits are a thing of the past. What’s more, the water-resistant sleeves make it simple to wipe clean and keep dry.
The verdict: Baby bibs
Nuby's lock n roll on-the-go bib is the obvious winner that ticks all the boxes. The bib is sturdy enough to prevent it being torn off by little ones but at the same time, it's light enough to go unnoticeable during meals. The pocket is a wipeable material and the pouch alone is big enough to pack the bib into itself, making it perfect for busy or travelling families.
