Mirror, mirror, on the wall, which is the fairest of them all?
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, which is the fairest of them all?

Mirrors might be most associated with vanity but they also offer a clever way of lighting up dark corners and making small spaces seem bigger.

They can also be design statements bringing a shot of personality into your home (great if you rent and are limited on the stamp you can make) with a huge range of decorative options available in shops and online.

Fashions come and go so buying in line with your longer term tastes is our advice but if you want your interiors to reflect current trends (pun not intended...) then opt for a round mirror which works wonders softening up a room full of harder lines and adds interest to a gallery wall dominated by rectangular frames. Best of all, you needn’t worry about it hanging straight.

Metallics are still firmly in - don’t be afraid to mix copper, brass, nickel and brushed gold for a hint of that ubiquitous industrial style favoured by the hippest bars and brunch spots. Scandi-style clean lines are also hot, especially against dramatic dark walls.

Practicality is important too – after all, the best design is both beautiful and functional - so you may be interested in a mirror with coat hooks or an attached shelf for plants and knick-knacks. Full-length mirrors hung in bedrooms and hallways are a must for checking yourself out in full before leaving for that important meeting or more important party.

To find our mirrors of the moment, we spent hours digging and delving in shops and online, hunting for quality, aesthetic appeal and ease of hanging while considering their value for money.

Measurements are included in case you already have a space in mind, as are images of them in situ so you can get an accurate sense of their scale. The weight has also been noted and some of these mirrors are heavy, so you might want to rope in a pal to help hoick yours onto the wall. Note that not all of the below come with the necessary fixtures and fittings, so you might need to invest in some DIY bits and bobs after ordering.
