This British classic was designed in the 1950s but looks just at home today, particularly in a modern black finish. Its compact wood frame makes it perfect for small living rooms and bedrooms.

3. Signal blanket: £240, eleanorpritchard.com

(Eleanor Pritchard Signal Blanket)

Bringing a modern twist to British heritage, Eleanor Pritchard’s reversible wool blanket is patterned with strong lines that reference sound waves. Cosy details like the exaggerated mustard trim remind us of the thick itchy blankets our grandparents had.

4. John Lewis House Abin Side Table: £49, johnlewis.com

Finding a British equivalent to match IKEA’s value isn’t always easy, but the Abin table from John Lewis’ House range shows there is hope. It’s humble design, a white top on splayed wooden legs, makes it a great base for showing off a statement lamp or vase.

5. Opera table lamp: £35, made.com

We picked this bold design for daring to be more extraordinary than everyday; like a miniature sculpture, the way its round bulbs branch off the central stem demands that it be seen from all angles.

6. Tom Dixon Form Teapot: £140, liberty.co.uk

Made from spun brass, Tom Dixon’s Form teapot nods to they heyday of British industry. We love its unusual shape and the way the gold wash finish contrasts with a sturdy black Bakelite handle.

Verdict
John Lewis' House range gives designer collections a run for their money in the style stakes, for a fraction of the cost. The Abin table is a case in point. For a piece that will stand the test of time - this one's already a modern classic, after all - Ercol's stacking chair is sound investment.
