We know, we know, it can be hard to think of something just right for Valentine’s Day. So, we’ve given you a helping hand with this lovely lot. All the gifts on this list are a combination of little luxuries that she might not treat herself to, things that are genuinely useful or pretty pieces that she’ll treasure.

1. LSA Champagne Saucer and Walnut Coasters: £45, Black By Design

Planning on toasting Valentine’s Day at home? If so, these glasses will help things feel extra-special. We reckon she’ll love the fact you haven’t gone for the more obvious flutes and the chunky stems, while sleek walnut bases help these further stand out from the pack. Now just make sure you’ve also got a bottle of bubbly chilling.

2. Toolally Mini Art Deco Drop Earrings: £45, John Lewis

If she likes her jewellery on the statement side, try a pair of Brit brand Toolally’s out-of-the-ordinary acrylic creations. We love the contrasting red and light green on this art deco-inspired pair. The stud fittings are gold-plated and the drop is about 5cm. These also come in gold and charcoal versions and there are bigger ones in the same design to choose from.

3. Wool and the Gang Pillow Talk Kit: £47.50, Wool and the Gang

Has she been going on since January that 2017 is the year she is going to learn a new skill? Well then give her the kit to make a cushion (really that’s two pressies in one, sort of). East London-based Wool and the Gang will provide the yarn – you can pick the colour – and needles if she needs them, with an easy-to-follow pattern in the kit, which is suitable for beginners. If she needs extra guidance, there are lots of useful “how to” videos on the website. Cushion pad not included.

4. Bluebird Tea Co. Personalised Tea Tin Gift: From £20, Not on the High Street

If she’s a tea lover, we reckon she’ll like one of Bluebird’s delicious teas in a personalised tin. The Sussex-based company’s blends range from gingerbread chai to rhubarb and custard flavours. If she prefers things more traditional, there is also the more conventional Earl Grey crème (the fragrant tea she will expect, with just a hint of vanilla). She’ll get 150g of loose tea and you can add her name then a personalised message if you fancy. Include a teaspoon and diffuser to make it extra-special.

5. Bkr Limited Edition Glass Water Bottle with Metallic Heart: From £28, Amara

Most girls will have a water bottle on their desk or that they carry around with them. If, like ours, hers is a tatty old plastic number, upgrade it for a posh version that she might not treat herself to. Made of glass with a soft silicone cover, Bkr is an A-list favourite – Giselle Bundchen and Jessica Alba have been spotted carrying theirs. This white version with a metallic heart (made for V-day, right?) comes in 500ml and 1-litre versions. We’d say the 500ml option works for both desk and bag, whereas the bigger one is a bit weighty to carry about.

6. Anna Walker London Slim Cardholder: £45, Anna Walker London

Yes, it’s a little thing, but for any girl who is always having to delve into the bottom of her handbag to find her travel card or work pass, or has a bulging purse, a cardholder is super-useful. This is a particularly chic version – made by London-based designer Anna Walker from Italian vegetable-tanned leather. You can personalise it with gold or silver debossed initials as part of the price. There are three slots for her plastic. Choose from eight shades, we like the Valentine-appropriate red.

7. Diptyque Rosa Mundi Scented Candle, 190g: £48, John Lewis

If you’re going to buy a scented candle, make it an extra-special one, like this rose-scented beauty from chic Parisian brand Diptique. In a floral-decorated jar - a collaboration with paper and fabric designer and restorer Antoinette Poisson – you get a heady hit of rose and top notes of currant and bergamot, as well as fruity lychee and earthy geranium. The need to know: the scent’s romantic, without being over-powering, the jar’s pretty, and at around 60 hours burn time, it will last a lot longer than your average bouquet of flowers.

8. Lee Renee Halo Necklace: £49, Wolf and Badger

For girls who like their jewellery more delicate, try this simple little 18 carat gold vermeil sphere from London designer Lee Renee. You can choose either a 16-inch or 18-inch chain and there is also a silver version, so you could buy two of different lengths for her to layer up. At 1.1cm in diameter, the pendant is small but very pretty.

9. Treatwell Voucher: From £10, Treatwell

Trust us, no girl will say no to a bit of pampering. Treatwell works with thousands of salons and spas all over the country, so she can book a treatment of her choice online. From manicures and pedicures to aromatherapy massages and luxurious facials, there should be something that she will love. Either get a voucher sent that comes in a smart white gift box or an email gift card can be sent to her inbox instantly if you’ve left it to the last minute (or your email and you can print it out and pop it in a card).

10. Daylesford Marble Heart Plate: £39, Ocado

Okay, so heart-shaped things can be a little cheesy, but bear with us, as this marble plate is one that you’ll get a lot of use out of at home if you both like entertaining. Our tip: buy this and then get a delicious cheeseboard to have with it on 14 February. It’s 20 x 20cm, and there's a smaller version for £20 (pictured), if you feel like splashing out on both.

The Verdict: Valentine's Day gifts for her under £50

For something you can both enjoy, opt for the super-elegant LSA glasses – plus fizz. Or if you want to treat her to some jewellery, try Toolally for girls who like their pieces statement or Lee Renee if she usually wears more delicate necklaces and earrings.
