Saturday Night Live brilliantly parodied the dumbest thing about Avatar

'Was it laziness? Was it cruelty?'

"Avatar, the giant international blockbuster used the Papyrus font as its logo," Ryan Gosling's tortured vocals utter.

Yes, this was a sketch on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, which Gosling hosted, one which brilliantly dove into the most perplexing aspect of James Cameron's 2009 film about blue cat people - one of the most expensive movies ever made, yet bearing a default computer font as its title.

Papyrus is, surely, the second worst font in existence after Comic Sans, and yet here it's so brazenly displayed in a context that isn't "hookah bars, Shakira merch, off-brand teas", as Gosling yells.

"He just highlighted Avatar, he clicked the drop-down menu, and then just randomly selected Papyrus," his character tells his psychiatrist in the sketch. "Like a thoughtless child just wandering by a garden, just yanking leaves along the way."

Of course, Cameron's film has been back making headlines after a billion dollar production commenced on a full quartet of Avatar sequels. And, no, they have not fixed the artwork.

"He just got away with it," Gosling's character broods. "This man, this professional graphic designer. Was it laziness? Was it cruelty?" Even a friend pointing out that the font has clearly been modified isn't enough, in this case.

The sketch turned out to be the runaway winner during an uneven opener to SNL's new season, despite being bolstered by Gosling's own hilarious struggle to keep a straight face.
