Netflix has revealed its most popular programmes around the world for the year 2019, with The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann landing in first position in the UK.

The streaming platform shared data with Deadline highlighting its most successful releases in the UK, Australia, India, France and Germany – all territories it serves outside of the US, where the company is based. Data shared by The Wrap reflects the most popular titles among US viewers.

In the UK, the true-crime documentary series charting the disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann was the most popular title among TV shows and movies alike.

6 Underground, an action thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, came second, followed by Murder Mystery, a comedy led by Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

The TV series The Witcher was only released on 20 December but still came fourth in the ranking, before Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman.

Also included in the top 10 are Ricky Gervais’s After Life, the third season of Stranger Things, David Attenborough’s Our Planet, the acclaimed TV show Sex Education, and the true-crime documentary Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes.

On the US side, Murder Mystery came first, followed by Stranger Things's third season and 6 Underground.

The Incredibles 2 is in fourth place, before The Irishman and The Witcher.

The film Triple Frontier, starring Ben Affleck, is in seventh place. Rounding up the top 10 are Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, the Ted Bundy biopic starring Zac Efron, the superhero series The Umbrella Academy, and the period crime drama The Highwaymen with Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson.

In Australia, Murder Mystery, 6 Underground and The Witcher were the three most popular programmes unveiled by the streamer in the past year.

Viewers in India gravitated towards the second season of the series Sacred Games, the romantic drama Kabir Singh, and the crime drama Article 15.

French viewers also favoured The Witcher and 6 Underground, though the third season of Spanish series Money Heist came first in the ranking.

The same three programmes occupy the top of the ranking in Germany, albeit in a different order – with 6 Underground coming first.
