Melissa McCarthy snubbed from Gilmore Girls reboot

The star will not be a part of Netflix's four-part revival of the cult television series.

Not to deflate the joyous news of Gilmore Girls' return to screens, but there will be one familiar face missing from Stars Hollow: Melissa McCarthy's loveable, sweet Sookie.

When begged by a fan to make an appearance on the revival, McCarthy revealed on Twitter that she hadn't actually been approached for the role. This is despite creator Amy Sherman-Palladino telling TVLine that she hoped McCarthy might be available for a brief cameo in the Netflix-commissioned series.

"She’s really f*cking busy," Sherman-Palladino stated. "But the thing I have said [to her team] is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene'. Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] — even if for just a cameo — we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out. That’s the way we left it."

Whatever point of miscommunication between McCarthy's team, Sherman-Palladino, and McCarthy herself may have occurred; the actress' tweet does seem to suggest she's open to the possibility of an appearance on the show in some capacity. Production has only recently started, and she doesn't appear to have any formally announced projects that she's currently filming, with Ghostbusters currently wrapping up post-production in time for a 15 July release.

Furthermore, McCarthy owes a fair amount to Gilmore Girls for her recurring, breakout role; it surely afforded her the kind visibility that, in turn, eventually led to her own establishment as a major comedic player with the likes of Bridesmaids and The Heat. Her post-show fame shouldn't necessarily rule her involvement out, especially off the back of Bradley Cooper reprising his debut role from Wet Hot American Summer in Netflix's own miniseries sequel to the cult film.

Netflix's Gilmore Girls revival will consist of four 90-minute episodes; already confirmed to return are Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore), Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore), Scott Patterson (Luke Danes), Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore), Sean Gunn (Kirk Gleason), and Keiko Agena (Lane Kim).
