Matt Baker is close to tears as he leaves The One Show after 10 years

Matt Baker fought back tears as he departed The One Show after a decade as co-presenter, though only appeared via video link due to coronavirus concerns.

Baker has been self-isolating with his family as a precaution against coronavirus, after he exhibited some symptoms of the illness.

It has meant, however, that Baker’s final appearances as One Show co-host occurred via video-link. He explained that his bon voyage was originally going to be “a big celebration”, but that he is instead having “a G&T” at home to make up for it.

While cradling his pet dog on his living room sofa, Baker thanked the show’s dedicated audience.

“It goes without saying,” Baker began, “I want to thank each and every one of our viewers, who have shown their support and their compassion – and thank you for your company.”

He continued: “It’s been superb. I’ve loved every single second, and now I’m gonna get to watch The One Show like one of you guys, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Baker’s co-presenter Alex Jones, herself choking up, responded: “You have given everything to this show for the last 10 years, and you’ve made it what it is and it’s been really good fun, so thank you again, Matt.”

Baker announced his One Show departure in December, expressing an eagerness to spend more time with his family.

Jones, who has presented the show with Baker since 2011, revealed this month that Baker won’t immediately be replaced. Instead a number of guest co-hosts will present the show, likely through the summer.

Despite leaving The One Show, Baker will continue presenting BBC series including Countryfile.
