Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 5 preview

The latest episode of Game of Thrones featured several moments that seemed like characters were saying goodbye for the final time.

With just two episodes to go before the HBO show draws to a close, the writers have begun to move the action from Winterfell to King’s Landing as the battle for the Iron Throne intensifies.

Daenerys has left the north already – a decision that has had cataclysmic consequences. But, Jon Snow will arrive in the forthcoming episode, which will be broadcast on HBO and Sky Atlantic this Sunday.

Still, in the most recent outing – titled “The Last of the Starks” – there was a farewell scene between Jon and his good friends Samwell Tarly and Tormund Giantsbane. It was a moving moment that remarkably seemed like this could be the final time the characters saw each other on screen.

The other character Jon saw for the final time was his direwolf Ghost – but fans had to put up with Jon scowling at his beloved pet and walking away rather than petting him.

Director David Nutter has shed some light on why this was.

“Since the direwolves are kind of CG creations, we felt it best to keep it as simple as possible,” Nutter told Huffington Post. “And I think that it played out much more powerfully that way.”

Fans aren’t convinced and have expressed their disappointment on Twitter.

Kristofer Hivju, who plays Tormund, believes that his character is a better companion than Jon anyway.

He said: “I think Jon is right that the south isn’t the place for a direwolf. In episode two or three they killed one of them [Lady, Sansa’s direwolf] – it’s a wild animal, it’s like a wolf plus two! I think it’s best for Ghost to go north.”

Game of Thrones fans aren’t too impressed with several moments from the latest episode – one being the climactic death that saw Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) killed by The Mountain.

Another scene, involving Brienne of Tarth, prompted fans to accuse the episode’s writers – showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss – of “hitting new lows”

The show will be available on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
