Game of Thrones: Arya kills Night King in season 8

The Game of Thrones showrunners threw one huge reference to the Night King’s fate in the season eight premiere.

*Major spoilers below – you have been warned*

By now, the world knows that Arya Stark creeps up on the Night King in the godswood, just after he’s slain Theon Greyjoy, and fulfills the destiny that was cryptically told to her by Melisandre back in season three.

But just how she managed it was hinted in the very first episode of season eight. The tease arrived during an interaction with Jon Snow (Kit Harington), just after they were reunited – in the exact same place the Night King would die – for the first time since the first season.

As he’s standing in the godswood, he asks Arya: “How’d you sneak up on me?”

Following the broadcast of the episode, many have questioned just how Arya managed to evade the army of the undead – but this was an early reminder of Arya’s (tedious) few seasons training to be Westeros’ greatest assassin over in Braavos.

Williams herself has revealed that she was worried fans would feel disappointed by the fact it was Arya who saves the day.

You can find a list of who died - as well as a ranking of how well they fought in the big battle - here.

The intense trailer for next week’s episode sees everyone turn their attentions to the Iron Throne and the fate of Cersei Lannister.

The final season of Game of Thrones continues every Sunday. Our extensive ranking of every episode in the series – from worst to best – is below.

The show will be available on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
