Opening Credits Game of Thrones Season 8

The final season of Game of Thrones is treating fans to a brand new title sequence that’s extremely different to anything they’ve seen before.

The opening credits have long been designed to set the stage for what viewers are about to watch, featuring CG versions of the cities and structures that serve as playing fields for the characters scattered about Westeros.

Each new season has featured an updated version of the titles that always play to Ramin Djawadi’s theme tune and season eight is no different.

However, considering the number of locations has dwindled now that almost all the characters are united for the battle against the Night King, the credits sequence has been filmed in a much different style.

Most notably, a lot of locations are covered in snow signifying that winter has indeed arrived. There is also a huge hole where the wall used to be – this is because ice dragon Viserion sent it tumbling down in the closing moments of season seven.

For now, though, King’s Landing seems to remain untouched by the threat of the White Walkers – and the title sequence ends with the reminder of the thing the characters have been fighting over since the show began: the Iron Throne.

Watch a snippet from the updated title sequence below.

One moment also shows the location known as Last Hearth turning to ice. This is the place that Jon Snow (Kit Harington) remarked would be the first obstacle in the path of the army of the dead as they marched towards Winterfell. The settlement is ruled by Ned Umber, the 10-year-old who became Lord after his surviving family members perished in the Battle of the Bastards.

The final season of Game of Thrones continues every Sunday.

You can find our extensive ranking of every episode – from the worst to best – below.

The show will be available on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
