The season eight premiere of Game of Thrones appeared to feature a reference to Ed Sheeran who cameoed in season seven .
While wasting no time in putting the bustling ensemble in place for the show’s final six episodes, the new instalment – the HBO show’s first since August 2017 – found a spare moment to seemingly reference the fate of the singer’s character.
In the season seven premiere, which was broadcast in 2017, Sheeran played a Lannister soldier whose singing captured the attention of Arya Stark (Maisie Williams).
However, if one of Bronn's prostitutes is to be believed, it seems the singer was scorched off-screen just episodes later in “The Spoils of War”, which saw Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) wipe out Lannister forces – just before Drogon takes a bolt to the head.
"You know that boy Eddie?" she says. "He came back with his face burnt off. He’s got no eyelids now."
The reference is likely a nod to the negative response to Sheeran’s controversial cameo. His appearance was the last in a long line of small roles for musicians, a compilation of which you can see below.

Ed Sheeran announced he had a cameo in season seven a long while before the episode actually aired and actually revealed the line of dialogue he had – terrible etiquette when it comes to a show whose fans detest spoilers. To be fair, it wasn’t really Ed’s fault. Maybe showrunners were giddy at having such a major star on set, but they did little or nothing to disguise the fact that, yes, that’s Ed Sheeran sitting at a campfire with some Lannister soldiers. Ed was also unable to disguise his glee at being on the show, so for the whole appearance he had a weird smile on his face, which looked weird, considering the entire world was at war – and until then Lannister soldiers weren’t particularly known for their sense of humour. It was so bad that Kristian Nairn – who plays Hodor – even called the cameo “stupid” and criticised the showrunners for the “snap to reality” it caused for the audience.

Game of Thrones music cameos, ranked worst to best 7. Coldplay's Will Champion (season 3) Coldplay’s Will Champion was spotted in one of the most shocking scenes in Game of Thrones: the Red Wedding. Champion played a drummer at Edmure Tully’s ill-fated gathering in “The Rains of Castamere”. Arguably Champion was a little too enthusiastic in a scene that was already full of foreboding, given the tense relationship between the Tullys and the Starks. His beard was also perhaps a little too modern compared to the grizzly facial hair sported by most Game of Thrones extras.

Bastille (season 7) Bastille filmed a cameo scene for season seven of Game of Thrones in Belfast, where they got to have a tour of the set, and ended up as wights. You can spot a very brief glimpse of guitarist Kyle Simmons and their tour manager Dick Meredith during the sinister march towards the Wall in the final episode of the season – unfortunately the others got cut from the final edit.

Of Monsters and Men (season six) Of Monsters and Men managed to avoid any bloodshed and made a perfectly lovely appearance as the band accompanying a theatre troupe in season six. The band later revealed that they had been begging to be on the show for years, before finally scoring the gig.

Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody (season 1) The best Game of Thrones music cameos tend to be the ones that are so subtle that you have to go back and watch them again to check it really happened. Such was the case for Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, who was the first musician to get a cameo and who was also the most easy to miss. He appeared as a Bolton soldier, who sings “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” (written by George RR Martin in the original book series), as the patrol make their way through the woods.

Sigur Ros (season 4) The Icelandic band were lucky to escape with their lives after failing to impress King Joffrey during their performance for his wedding to Margaery Tyrell at King’s Landing. Fortunately Joffrey was a bit occupied with choking on his own vomit after having some very nasty poison slipped into his wine.

Dr Feelgood's Wilko Johnson Technically, this probably doesn’t qualify as a cameo given Wilko Johnson’s stint as the mute royal executioner Ser Ilyn Payne took place over several episiodes in seasons one and two. But he was so brilliant it’s impossible not to mention him – particularly for the scene where he stares blankly at a young Sansa Stark before being shooed away by The Hound.

Mastodon (seasons 5 and 7) The American metal band did a great job as wildlings (it helped that they were already really hairy) in season five, for the episode "Hardhome". After being brutally slaughtered during a terrifying attack on the wildlings by a horde of wights, Mastodon were brought back to life as White Walkers, which Brann Dailor described as "beyond amazing". Their cameo went down so well with fans that they were invited back to play wights again in the season seven finale.
Elsewhere, the reunion-heavy episode featured a terrifying death at the hands of the Night King.

Once you get over the fact that Kristian Nairn was essentially getting paid to repeat the word "Hodor" over and over, it's hard to deny that Bran Stark's protector was a heartwarming addition to the show. His death − the breathtaking "Hold the Door" sequence − will go down as one of the show's most memorable moments.

Stannis was a horrible father. His two favourite children became incestuous lovers, and he blamed his youngest for the death of his wife. Without Tywin, though, the Lannister family would not be nearly as riveting as they are to watch.

Every time Dany meets someone new, she forces Missandei to read out her entire CV. I guess everyone would if theirs was as impressive. Dany really has had a great journey to the top − a shame she could not have come to Westeros slightly earlier.

Olenna's scenes were always ones to cherish. The Queen of Thorns was as cunning as the best of them and seemed like she could worm her way out of any situation, all from the comfort of her own chair.

Liam Cunningham's performance as the curt Davos Seaworth has quietly been one of the best things about the series since his introduction. As Jon Snow's kingly advisor, he's recently seen himself thrust into the heart of the series and, simply put, Game of Thrones would be a less enjoyable show without him.

Lest we forget that Melisandre is actually a shrivelled old witch who has been manipulating men for hundreds of years. Her faith in the Lord of Light, though, could very well be misplaced.

Few shows can bring in characters midway through their run that have such an impact as Oberyn. The Viper quickly became a fan favourite, and his death remains one of the show's most squirm-inducing moments.

Killing off a main character during a show's first season was practically unheard of before Game of Thrones. Early on in the series, it was hard to pin down Varys, a slippery eel of a character who has "little birds" fluttering around Westeros, feeding back crucial information. Going into the final season, his true intentions are clear: he's all for Daenerys taking the Iron Throne, even if he doesn't live to see the day (“I have to die in this strange country, just like you," Melisandre prophesied last season).

Perhaps the show's best wise-cracking side-kick, Bronn only has one loyalty: money. Paired with either of the Lannister lads, Tyrion or Jaime, Bronn makes for excellent company.

Brienne is a reassuring force of good in a world filled with scheming layabouts. She's also one of the most deadly. There would be no Game of Thrones without Littlefinger. The silver-tongued manipulator had Jon Arryn killed, setting off a snowball that turned into an avalanche. As smart as he may have been, Littlefinger was finally outplayed by his own pupil, Sansa Stark.

Sansa has perhaps had the most interesting story arc of any character on Thrones. Arya Stark, arguably the greatest character of the first few seasons, was one of the biggest victims of the series overtaking George RR Martin's source material. From his regular delivery of the phrase"F** the king" to that chicken scene, The Hound is a reckless creation whose high ranking on this list can be attributed to the searing performance from Rory McCann. Most effective when paired with Arya Stark.

No character has been as hated by the fandom as Joffrey. His wicked ways and disgusting behaviour haunted the show's first four seasons. But, as The Hound says, "F**k the King".

The lady of Winterfell, Catelyn Stark, became the show's honorary lead after the untimely beheading of her husband, Ned (Sean Bean) at the end of season one. As she tried to take control of spiralling events in the second and third run, Thrones was handed its most resilient character. Michelle Fairley's guttural cry of anguish before meeting her tragic end during the Red Wedding will always be the show's most horrific moment.

If the characters above Jaime in this list are the show's greatest characters, Jaime is the show's most disarming. The Lannister brother − the Kingslayer − started the series as a long-haired bad guy of the tallest order, but his humbling over the past few seasons have seen him inch his way into the hearts of viewers.

Blamed for the death of his mother and hated for being a dwarf, Tyrion turned to drink and prostitutes to numb the pain. However, Tyrion has a fierce intellect, capable of outsmarting the toughest enemies (and offering cutting lines that George RR Martin says often take weeks to write). More importantly, despite being betrayed and cast away time and time again, Tyrion selflessly only wants the best for the people of Westeros. A true hero.

Game of Thrones characters - ranked 1. Cersei Lannister Played by : Lena Headey
The Mad Queen, alone on the Iron Throne. Cersei has, over the course of seven seasons, seen her three children die, driven her lover/brother away, blown up a church with a half dozen major characters inside, arranged the death of her husband (King Robert) and attempted to have her other brother (Tyrion) killed multiple times. Yet, thanks to Lena Headey's empathetic performance, you still feel sorry for the terrifying Queen of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. As one of the most complicated character to have ever reached television screens, there's no denying her place as the best Thrones character to date.
