Taylor Swift removes controversial line from ‘Me!’ after backlash

Singer previously said the lyric was a 'tone decision'

Ahead of the release of her new album Lover, Taylor Swift has removed a "cringeworthy" lyric from the single Me!

Four months ago, Swift released the song featuring Brendon Urie, which originally featured a line in which she sang: “Hey kids, spelling is fun!”

However, before the album release on Friday, PopCrave reported that the version of the song available on Apple Music had removed the lyric.

The change comes after the pop star faced backlash over the line when it was first released, with many people calling it “cringe-worthy” or “childish”.

Others pointed out that the singer doesn’t actually spell anything in the song, making the lyric seem even more out of place.

At the time, Swift had defended the lyric as a “tone decision” in an interview with Hit.com.

“So the lyrics, that’s a tone decision that we made in the studio,” she said. “We literally were like, okay, let’s say ‘Hey kids! Spelling is fun’ because we want everyone to know that this song is not really serious because it’s not, like, a serious love song.”

Now, following the decision to alter the song, many people have applauded the singer for removing the lyric.

“Taylor removed ‘Hey kids! Spelling is fun!’ on Apple Music,” one person wrote. “A win for me.”

However, others are upset with the change from the original, as they had spent four months singing the lyric.

“Can’t believe Taylor removed the ‘spelling is fun’ from Me!” one person wrote. “Yes it was kind of childish but it was cute…”

Another said: “Y’all really bullied Taylor into removing ‘Hey kids, spelling is fun’ from Me! Now the song doesn’t have the same feel. No matter how much you hated it, it brought the song together. Now ME! feels off.”

As of now, the original version of Me! is still available on Spotify and YouTube.
