Coronavirus: Neil Diamond sings 'Sweet Caroline' to encourage fans to wash their hands during pandemic

Artist follows Liam Gallagher in changing the lyrics to a classic song

Neil Diamond is the latest musician to change the lyrics to one of his classic songs to encourage fans to wash their hands and stay safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

The artist performed a rendition of his hit “Sweet Caroline“ and posted the video to his followers, in order to highlight the importance of handwashing and social distancing.

Diamond shared a video of him playing the guitar and singing the new version of the song to Twitter with the caption: “Stay safe out there! ‘Hands... washing hands…’”

“I know we’re going through a rough time right now, but I love you, and I think maybe if we sing together we might feel a little bit better,” he says.

He then sings the opening verse of “Sweet Caroline”, with the revised chorus: “Hands, washing hands, reaching out, don’t touch me, I won’t touch you.”

Diamond’s post follows one by Liam Gallagher, who sang a number of “alternative” Oasis hits while washing his own hands at his kitchen sink.

The songs included: “Champagne Soapernova”, “Wonderwash”, and “Soapersonic”.
