Brits 2019: Beyonce says Meghan Markle queen painting was in honour of Black History Month

'We bow down to one of our Melanated Monas'

Beyonce has explained the meaning behind the painting of Meghan Markle looking like the queen that appeared during her Brits acceptance speech with Jay-Z.

The singer posted a message to Instagram in which she revealed the nod was “in honour” of Black History Month.

She congratulated the Duchess of Sussex on her pregnancy, writing: “We bow down to one of our Melanated Monas.”

The married couple won the best international group prize at the ceremony for their work as duo The Carters and sent a pre-recorded video, which was broadcast during the ceremony.

The film was a reference to their music video for single “APES**T”, in which they appear in front of the Mona Lisa in the Louvre.

The couple are not the only famous faces to show support for Meghan.

George Clooney has said she is being “pursued and vilified” and compared her treatment with that of Diana, Princess of Wales.

His human rights lawyer wife Amal recently attended the duchess’s baby shower in New York City, alongside her Suits co-star Abigail Spencer and TV star Gayle King.

Meghan is due to give birth in late April or early May.

Artists up for awards included Dua Lipa, George Ezra and Florence + the Machine. On the night, The 1975 and Calvin Harris reigned victorious, taking home two awards each.

Other international artists to win awards included Drake and Ariana Grande who were both unable to attend the awards ceremony.
