The King's Parade share new video for 'Mother Tongue' - premiere

More new music for the weekend

Rather wonderfully I've actually know these guys for a few years - from way back when I was doing work experience on a local paper (we were both just starting out).

Since then, London-based band The King's Parade have taken a big, big step up with their music and really honed in on their sound, it's alt-soul melding classic blues influences with more of a modern pop vibe.

Speaking of the single the band said: “‘Mother Tongue’ is about realising you’re losing touch with where you came from. You haven’t necessarily changed as a person but your ambitions and ideals have. It’s always difficult to get the balance right between moving forward and sticking to your roots. Ultimately, the person you were will always be within you and it’s important to be aware of that.”

Q&A with The King's Parade

What are you listening to at the moment?

All sorts! Some of our favourites are Mr Jukes, Moses Sumney, Rhye and our mates Island. We've actually just started our own Spotify playlist to let people know what music we're digging!

What are your plans for summer?

We're going to be playing at a few festivals this year including Secret Garden Party (Sat 22nd July) and Smoked and Uncut (Sun 23rd July).

We're also excited to be heading back into the studio in August to record a few singles. We've been working on some exciting new stuff and we can't wait to get it out there.

What was the first gig you ever played and what’s been the best so far?

Our first gig was awful! It was at a venue in Islington called Rattlesnake. We started the set without Sam (keys / backing vocals) who was late because he was burning our CDs to sell that night. I think you could count the amount of people in the audience on one hand.

We all have different favourite gigs. Chris’ (drums) is one of our early shows at Bedroom Bar in Shoreditch. It was the first time we had people singing the lyrics in the crowd and the first time we didn't have to rely on friends and family to come down! Obviously some of our more recent gigs have been up on the list like our second EP release show at the Oslo in Hackney or our festival headline show in Bremen, Germany. Those were some unforgettable moments in our career.

What’s the biggest change you’ve made since I spoke with you last?

I think the last time we spoke, we had only just started and our sound wasn't as refined as it is now. Our style and songs have evolved so much since our first EP. We're getting to a stage where we feel like we're really getting to where we want to be musically. Then again I might be saying the same thing to you next year!
