Danny Boyle may have confirmed production is officially underway on Trainspotting 2 earlier this month, but the film's original star Ewan McGregor has expressed his excitement over filming the long-anticipated sequel.

The actor, promoting new film Miles Ahead, told Collider that he's been waiting for the sequel to Boyle's 1996 modern classic for just as long as the fans.

"It’s been ten years since Irvine Welsh wrote the sequel novel, Porno, so it’s been a long time, a lot of speculation," he said, adding: "For me, too!"

"Ten years ago, I didn’t want to do it; I wasn’t ready to do it. Also, there was no script."

McGregor went on to reveal how fast moving the process has been, revealing the actors only received the finished screenplay "very recently."

"[It] was really, really, really good. I think, if that had not happened, none of us would be into it. I think we’re all sort of somewhat protective of what Trainspotting means to people, and what it means to us.

"None of us want to make a poor sequel to it. So had we not been presented with the most extraordinary script, which we were, I think we wouldn’t be making the sequel. But because we were, we are."

The sequel will indeed be based on Welsh's novel Porno which was released in 2002; the author and Carlyle - who played Begbie - are set to discuss the character's influence during a talk hosted by the Edinburgh International Book Festival (EIBF) in April.

The original centered on the lives of a group of heroin addicts residing in Edinburgh during the late Eighties.

No title or release date has yet been announced but cameras begin rolling in May.
