Suicide Squad Extended Cut Trailer

The full cast of The Suicide Squad has been unveiled, featuring Viola Davis, Idris Elba and Margot Robbie.

Director James Gunn published the full list on Twitter on Friday, along with the warning: “Don’t get too attached.”

As planned, Davis, Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney, who all appeared in the 2016 Suicide Squad, are part of the new cast as well.

Also included on Gunn’s list are SNL cast member Pete Davidson, Doctor Who alum Peter Capaldi, WWE star John Cena, Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle, The Rookie), Taika Waititi (who directed Thor: Ragnarok and also plays Korg in the MCU), David Dastmalchian (Ant-Man, The Flash) and Jennifer Holland (American Horror Story, American Pie Presents: The Book of Love).

Joaquín Cosío, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn (James Gunn’s brother, who plays Kraglin in the MCU), Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Julio Ruiz and Michael Rooker round out the list.

The Suicide Squad is currently slated to be released on 6 August, 2021.

Gunn didn’t release details of each performer’s role in his tweet. Davis starred in the 2016 movie as Amanda Waller while Robbie played Harley Quinn – who will get her own film, Birds of Prey, in 2020.

Kinnaman appeared as Rick Flag and Courtney portrayed Captain Boomerang.

Gunn’s The Suicide Squad has been billed a full reboot of the franchise rather than a sequel to the 2016 film.

Producer Peter Safran told JoBlo in March: ”First of all, we don’t call [the film] Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it.

“It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot.”

Notably absent from the new The Suicide Squad cast are 2016 alums Will Smith (who played Deadshot) and Jared Leto (who appeared as the Joker).

Joaquin Phoenix plays the latter role in Joker, Todd Phillips’s upcoming movie dedicated to the character – but Phillips has said that Phoenix’s Joker won’t appear in other DC Universe films such as The Suicide Squad.
