SAG Awards 2019: celebrities wish a 'Happy 25th Anniversary' to the Screen Actors Guild Awards

The Screen Actors Guild Awards 2019 took place on Sunday evening in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall – with Black Panther and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel emerging as the top winners of the night.

The cast of Black Panther received the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, outshining strong contenders such as A Star is Born, BlacKKKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Crazy Rich Asians.

“Well, I’ll be,” said Chadwick Boseman, accepting the award for best ensemble in a motion picture. “To be young gifted and black.”

It was the only award Black Panther was nominated for beside best ensemble of stunt performers, which it also won.

This is one of the most high-profile awards won by the superhero film thus far, and Black Panther remains in the running for several Grammys as well as the Academy Award for Best Picture (among other Oscar nominations).

Rami Malek walked away with the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. He defeated Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Viggo Mortensen and John David Washington.

Malek dedicated the award for his performance in Bohemian Rhapsody to Mercury, as he did at the Golden Globes.

Glenn Close, meanwhile, won the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her part in The Wife, in which she plays the under-celebrated spouse of a Nobel Prize-winning author. Emily Blunt, Olivia Colman, Lady Gaga and Melissa McCarthy were also nominated in her category.

“One of the most powerful things we have as human beings are two eyes looking into two eyes,” said Close. “Film is the only art form that allows us the close-up.”

Tom Hanks was on hands in the evening to present M*A*S*H TV star Alan Alda with a lifetime achievement award.

In television, Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs Maisel swept the comedy categories, winning best ensemble while its stars Rachel Brosnahan and Tony Shalhoub took best actress and best actor respectively.

This Is Us, NBC’s acclaimed comedy-drama, won best ensemble cast for a television drama.

The ceremony, hosted by Will & Grace actor Megan Mullally, also saw Sandra Oh take home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. You can view a full list of the night’s winners here.

In the audience was Ron Stallworth, the retired police officer who inspired BlacKKKlansman, which was nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category.

Among the attendees in Sunday was also Geoffrey Owens, the Cosby Show actor who caused a stir when he was photographed working at a New Jersey Trader Joe’s. He was among the performers who began the show with the SAG Awards’ typical “I am an actor” testimony.
