Hannah Beachler has become the first African-American to win a Best Production Design Oscar.

“New Orleans, you heard me," she said before delivering an emotional speech that has since been praised by Reese Witherspoon and Angela Bassett.

Earlier in the evening, Ruth Carter became the first black winner of Best Costume Design for Black Panther, thanking director Ryan Coogler as well as BlacKkKlansman's Spike Lee.

The films vying for success include Alfonso Cuaron's Netflix drama Roma , the Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga musical A Star is Born and Green Book, which stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. The former led with 10 alongside Yorgos Lanthimos's The Favourite, with Adam McKay's political satire Vice following close behind with eight.
