This year’s Oscars ceremony may have had no host, but Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph were on hand to ensure the opening segment was a memorable one.

Earlier this month, ABC president Kerry Burke confirmed the ceremony would have no host for the first time in 30 years.

Burke said that the controversy that led to the decision, sparked by Kevin Hart’s departure as host after a number of old tweets resurfaced in which the comedian expressed homophobic views, has actually helped keep the Oscars relevant.

Instead, the ceremony had a series of segments presented by different stars, including Helen Mirren, Brian Tyree Henry and Melissa McCarthy with loads of rabbits in honour of Yorgos Lanthimos's period comedy, The Favourite.

Below is a list of the evening’s best jokes.

“Hey everybody, look under your seats: you’re all getting one of those cheese sandwiches from the Fyre festival” – Amy Poehler

“Don’t worry Bradley, after four kids, I too have peed myself at the Grammys” – Tina Fey to Bradley Cooper

“We’re not your hosts, we stand here a little too long so that the people who get USA Today tomorrow will think we’re hosts” – Tina Fey

Roma’s on Netflix? What’s next my microwave makes a movie?” – Tina Fey

“Hey Chadwick Boseman, Wakanda plans you got later?” – Maya Rudolph

Mel Gibson came up to me saying Wakanda Forever. He said a word after that but the ‘Wakanda forever’ part was nice” – Trevor Noah

“I want these people to like me to a degree I find embarrassing” – John Mulaney

"We're both from Brooklyn... and we both love hats" – Barbra Streisand about Spike Lee

Winners at this year's ceremony included Olivia Colman for The Favourite, Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody, Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk and Mahershala Ali whose film Green Book won Best Picture. Alfonso Cuarón took home Best Director for his Netflix drama Roma.
