Lady Bird actress Saoirse Ronan describes Greta Gerwig as a role model

Saoirse Ronan has discussed her excitement at being able to break Timothée Chalamet’s heart, as the duo embark on a romantic storyline once again in Greta Gerwig‘s upcoming film adaptation of Little Women.

The actors played lustful teenagers in Gerwig’s directorial debut Lady Bird, and will play doomed lovers once again as Jo (Ronan) and Laurie (Chalamet) in the adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel.

While they develop an intense friendship, Jo rejects Laurie when he proposes. “I loved that in Lady Bird, he was the one that broke my heart, but I got to break his heart in Little Women,” she said in an interview with Vanity Fair.

The actors’ chemistry is no new development. Chalamet’s character Kyle provides Ronan’s with a rather disappointing first sexual experience in Lady Bird, giving us the popular quote: “Who the f**k is on top their first time?”

Gerwig also revealed to Vanity Fair that Ronan and Chalamet’s characters will trade clothes throughout the story, suggesting that the film will address expectations of gender and sexuality.

“They find each other before they’ve committed to a gender,” Gerwig says. “It wouldn’t be wrong to call Saoirse handsome and Timothée beautiful. Both have a slightly androgynous quality that makes them perfect for these characters.”

Emma Watson, Meryl Streep and Laura Dern will also star in Little Women, which is due out in January 2020.
