Joker final trailer (2019)

Joker director Todd Phillips has begun sharing ideas of what a sequel should look like if it gets made.

Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the DC Comics villain in Joker, has indicated that he would be on board to reprise the role in a future movie.

Phillips himself has made it clear that he could be interested in revisiting the Joker universe with Phoenix.

While nothing is currently underway on the sequel side, Phillips shared his vision for a potential sequel in a conversation with the LA Times.

“It couldn’t just be this wild and crazy movie about the ‘Clown Prince of Crime,’" he told the newspaper.

“It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that this does. Because I think that’s ultimately why the movie connected, it’s what’s going on underneath.

"So many movies are about the spark, and this is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting.”

Joker has become the most successful R-rated film of all time at the box office.

The film is now considered a top contender heading into the 2020 Oscars race.
