Gravity has soared to the top of the UK box office, taking £6.2 million in its opening weekend and £600,000 in weekday previews.

The science fiction 3D epic starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock knocked Thor: The Dark World off the top spot following a strong start for the film.

Hailed for its use of visual effects, £5.6 million of Gravity’s box office opening came from 3D performances.

The film, which has already been tipped for Oscar success, is one of the best recent debuts of an original sci-fi, surpassing this year’s Oblivion, Elysium and 2012’s Prometheus.

Gravity marks director Alfonso Cuarón’s second best UK debut, behind 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’s £23.9 million debut.

Thor: The Dark World fell to second place in this week’s UK box office, taking £3 million after its debut last weekend.

The latest Marvel film, however, still beat Gravity in its opening weekend with a debut of £8.7 million.

Philomena starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan rose to third place, with Captain Phillips in fourth.
