First trailer for Cats released

The internet may have broken down in horror over the mutant cat-humans glimpsed in the first trailer for Cats two weeks ago, but actor Rebel Wilson, who portrays Jennyanydots in the forthcoming film adaptation, has now said that she “loved the reaction”.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Wilson addressed the trailer controversy and why viewers had such an extreme reaction to the cats.

“There’s some people who were like, ‘Oh my God,’ because it is brand-new technology that’s CGI,” she said. “I think people get confused because it’s essentially a dance movie in a lot of ways. So it really is all our own bodies. And yes, they’re covered in fur. I think some people found it a bit creepy ’cause we’re people but we look a bit like cats dancing around.”

She did add, however, that she’s not too worried about the creep factor. “I loved the reaction,” she said. “I think it was a bit polarising and people will be super-curious to see the finished product.”

The first cinematic adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s blockbuster musical, Cats is directed by Tom Hooper, and is headlined by a never-not-jarring ensemble that includes Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo and James Corden. It will be released 20 December.
