Aaron Paul returns as Jesse Pinkman in the upcoming feature-length film

Breaking Bad fans rejoice – a feature-length sequel, focusing on Aaron Paul’s character of Jesse Pinkman, is currently in production.

Paul, who starred opposite Bryan Cranston in the off-beat crime series, won three Emmy awards for his performance as the insolent meth cook.

While Breaking Bad’s finale was well-received, several story threads were left unresolved.

So, what do we know about the upcoming sequel? The Independent has compiled a list of everything we know so far about the upcoming film.

Release date and how to watch

According to reports, the film – which has the working title Greenbrier – will debut on Netflix, although no release date has been announced.

Breaking Bad had previously aired on AMC, which is also the home of the ongoing spin-off Better Call Saul.

However, Netflix has a strong relationship with the team behind Breaking Bad. The streaming service owns the international streaming rights to past episodes of both shows and is the first to air Better Call Saul in the UK.

The streaming service has not officially confirmed its involvement in the project.

What’s the story going to be?

The official logline provided by the New Mexico Film Office describes the film as following “the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom”. Considering the last time viewers saw Jesse he was escaping imprisonment from a meth lab, the “kidnapped man” can be assumed to be Paul’s character.

However, Jesse’s quest for freedom might not take him far; filming is taking place in Albuquerque, which was the setting for most of Breaking Bad.

Back in 2013, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan speculated on what might have happened to Paul’s character. In an interview with GQ, he said: “The most likely thing, as negative as this sounds, is that they’re going to find this kid’s fingerprints all over this lab and they’re going to find him within a day or a week or a month. And he’s still going to be on the hook for the murder of two federal agents.”

He added: “Even though that’s the most likely outcome, the way I see it is that he got away and got to Alaska, changed his name, and had a new life. You want that for the kid. He deserves it.”

Whether Gilligan has pursued either of these ideas is unknown.

Who’s coming back?

Gilligan is reportedly set to write and direct the movie, with executive producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein, who worked with him on Breaking Bad, also involved.

Two of the more likely actors to revive their roles alongside Paul as Jesse are Matt L Jones and Charles Baker, who played Jesse’s meth-addicted friends Badger and Skinny Pete.

Anna Gunn, RJ Mitte and Betsy Brandt – who played Skylar White, Walter Jr and Marie Schrader, respectively – are all outside bets to return.

Cranston, who played Breaking Bad’s protagonist Walter White, said on a talk show that he would “absolutely” appear in the film if Gilligan asked him, although Cranston’s character famously died in the series finale.

With a fifth season of Better Call Saul likely to air before the Netflix film nears release, there remains the possibility of a crossover. Bob Odenkirk, who played Jesse’s lawyer Saul Goodman and is the star of Better Call Saul, could make an appearance, as could Lavell Crawford, who plays Goodman’s hired goon, Huell Babineaux.

No new cast members have yet been announced.
