James Cameron is convinced that Avatar will once again top Avengers: Endgame at the box office.

Marvel’s superhero blockbuster surpassed Cameron’s film as the highest-grossing movie ever in July this year. Avatar, which was released in 2009, had held the previous record for a decade.

But in a recent interview with USA Today, the director proved optimistic as to the future of his film.

“I think it’s a certainty,” he said of Avatar once again rising to the top of the box office.

“But let’s give Endgame their moment and let’s celebrate that people are going to the movie theatre.”

Endgame has grossed $2.79bn at the worldwide box office while Avatar made $2.78bn, according to Box Office Mojo.

The third spot is occupied by Titanic, also a Cameron film.

A climb would be made possible for Avatar through a re-release, which itself would serve as a prelude to the release of the first Avatar sequel, which is planned for 17 December 2021.

Release dates for Avatar 3, 4 and 5 have been set for 2023, 2025 and 2027, but Cameron has indicated that some of the sequels’ future will depend on how the earlier chapters perform at the box office.

The director previously said that Endgame beating Avatar‘s box office record gave him “a lot of hope” because it showed that people still frequented cinemas.
