Ths week, a very long overdue thing happened: Richard E Grant was nominated for an Oscar.

Shortly after the announcement, which saw him recognised for his superior work in Marielle Heller’s biographical comedy-drama Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Grant tweeted a video in elation. It swiftly went viral.

“I’m absolutely overwhelmed," he said, smile spread across his face. “I cannot believe that 36 years later, I’m stading here as an almost 62-year-old man having an Oscar nomination.”

His joy is justified – Grant has long been one of the industry’s finest, and for that matter, hardest workers since his film career began in 1987.

Though it’s his big-screen debut – Bruce Robinson’s cult comedy Withnail & I – that remains his most reverred role, Grant has a back catalogue to be cherished. Over the years, he’s worked with some of the biggest directors – Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese Francis Ford Coppola – on both film and television, appearing opposite some incredible co-stars, from Anthony Hopkins to, er, Ginger Spice.

Grant’s also appeared in several productions, has starred in music videos and, in 2005, turned director for his biographical debut, Wah-Wah, starring Nicholas Hoult.

Whatever he crops up in, however big the role, Grant ensures he lingers in the memory – and below we run through the 10 best Richard E Grant performances.

The Oscars take place in Los Angeles on 24 February.
